A Case Study
One of the problems with the big box stores is that their materials are often a little thin. The fence pictured above is a common baluster fence a homeowner might purchase on any Saturday morning. He tosses it into the back of the SUV and off he goes. What he doesn't see is that the post wall thickness is slimmer than any professionally installed fence. The posts are usually 4x4 rather than 5x5. The balusters are 1" and glued on the rails rather than 1.5" and routed into the rails. The rails are screwed on the posts instead of routed into the posts. A year after the homeowner installs it things begin to crumble.
This one went from bad to worse. The homeowner in an attempt to repair the damage gathered up all the pieces and screwed the balusters back onto the rails. Success! Not really. The weight of all the screws added to the sections and caused the rails to sag severely. They sagged enough so that the rails pulled out of the posts. The sections fell.
The truth is you don't fix this mess, you replace it. Our Colonial Picket style has a 2x6 bottom rail with the one and one half inch square balusters routed into the rails. The middle rails are 2x3.5 and the balusters are routed straight through. The horizontal rails are routed into 5x5 posts that are cemented in the ground.
